Life of a UPSC aspirant at Mukherjee Nagar New Delhi

New Delhi as you call it, one of the finest places of India has become A home to UPSC aspirants. It is like a battle ground for around 40000 graduated young minds who join every year to crack the prestigious civil services exam. Over the last 20 or 30 years places like old Rajinder Nagar in Central Delhi and Mukherjee Nagar in North Delhi have evolved as a prominent places for UPSC preparation. My focus will be on Mukherjee Nagar as how this center behaves with fresher’s and off-course with old students.

Mukherjee Nagar is one of those colonies which were occupied by Hindu or Sindhi population who joined India after partition. Known for their hard work, risk taking ability and sharp business sense there is no doubt that the race has evolved as one of the richest one. Looking closely, one can observe that not all the families look to be working. Most of their income comes from renting their 10 by 10 rooms to UPSC aspirants. There is no doubt that the rate for single room is highest as compared to whole country. You have to come mentally prepared for the high rent of the rooms. Off-course with the passage of the time you can change the room and find a decent place in and around the main area.

If one would take a walk near Batra cinema complex then he can find that there are around 300 classes for civil services preparation. More or less they offer the same course. Though it is said that Mukherjee Nagar exclusively belongs to Hindi medium preparation, I did not find any exclusiveness in the area. Both Hindi and English medium classes are equal in number. There would be thousands of aspirants walking around the center going to or finishing their respective class.

Which class to join ? This question doesn't matter if you are a serious aspirant. Researching on IAS forums and popular websites can give you a fair bit of idea as which classes are good for the preparation. But the condition is that you must research before joining.

What about food? It is the only thing for which I can give five stars. Food here is of typical North Indian style with Punjabi touch to it. You would rarely find Tur dal. A typical Maharashtrian or South Indian would not find it difficult to eat it, provided he avoids regular ghee laden rotis.

How to reach Mukherjee Nagar? If you are traveling for the first time then it is best to book pre-paid rickshaw from Hajrat Nijamuddin railway station or New Delhi railway station. Pre-paid Rickshaw generally charge you around 200 rupees. From Hajrat NIjamuddin you can also use metro to reach Mukherjee Nagar. For that you have to reach to the Jangpuri metro station by auto. From Jangpuri you have to then travel to the central secretariat  and from central secretariats to GTT you can again use metro. From GTT you have to take auto to rich Mukherjee nagar.

A typical day of UPSC aspirant begins with a jogging in the morning, thanks to beautiful gardens around the center. You can use them to the fullest extent. Mukherjee nagar is a multicultural place. You can find students from Hariyana, UP, and North east. Students from other states area also quite large in number. Everyone seems to be busy in collecting notes and rushing for the classes. As far as girls are concerned, the place seems to be a safe one for them. You can find groups of girls walking freely around the area as late as 11 pm.

If one is a serious aspirant and wants to crack exam then this center seems to be a good one. Notes from the all the recognized institutes are freely available here. You can also find that required environment for the preparation. The only thing that is wanted here is will power to survive and that strong heart that can compete with rest of the players.
